There is a difference between learning SEO for Google and taking a course that was actually created by Google.

That distinction matters more than it may seem.

Search for Google SEO Courses and you will find a mixture of Google’s own training, university courses hosted on Coursera, third-party SEO academies, and articles that simply put the word “Google” in front of an SEO course. Some are useful. Some are little more than repackaged beginner material.

After eight years working in SEO and digital marketing, I have become fairly strict about this. I do not judge an SEO course by its star rating, the size of its student count, or how impressive the marketing page looks. I want to know what it actually teaches, how current the material is, whether the skills can be applied to a real website, and whether the claims are consistent with what Google itself documents.

For that reason, Google Search Central is my baseline. Whenever I evaluate an SEO concept, I start with Google’s documentation. When something I observe in practice appears different from what Google documents, I do not immediately assume Google’s documentation is wrong; I first look for differences in context, implementation, site type, or the specific Search feature involved.

That approach has served me far better than chasing every new SEO tactic that appears online.

So in this guide, I am covering both the best Google SEO courses and the official Google resources I believe every serious SEO learner should know about.

Google SEO Courses: What Does “Google SEO” Actually Mean?

The phrase Google SEO course can mean two different things:

  1. A course created or delivered by Google
  2. A course that teaches you how SEO works in Google Search

Those are not the same thing.

For example, Make sure customers find you online is genuinely a Google course on Skillshop. By contrast, Google SEO Fundamentals on Coursera is offered by the University of California, Davis. The course is highly relevant to Google SEO, but it is not a Google-produced course.

I think this distinction should be made explicit because otherwise a course list can give learners the wrong impression about who actually stands behind the curriculum.

The Official Google SEO Resources I Would Start With

Before paying for any course, I would start here.

And I mean that seriously.

Google Search Central is not just another SEO blog. It is Google’s own documentation for how Google Search works and how website owners can make their sites accessible, understandable, and eligible to appear in Search.

Google currently points users toward four major learning/support resources: Search Essentials, the Search Console Help Center, the SEO Starter Guide, and the official Google Search Central YouTube channel.

1. Google Search Central Documentation and YouTube

Google Search Central

Google Search Central is much larger than the Starter Guide.

Its documentation covers:

  • Crawling and indexing
  • Robots.txt
  • Sitemaps
  • Canonicalization
  • JavaScript SEO
  • Structured data
  • Search appearance
  • Ranking systems
  • Search Console
  • Page experience
  • International SEO
  • AI features in Search

Google’s documentation also provides the foundation for specialized areas of search, including Local SEO. For dedicated training, see our guide to Local SEO learning resources.

Before paying for another SEO course, go back to the source. Explore the official Google Search Central resources for the latest documentation, Search Console guidance, SEO guidance, and links to Google's official YouTube channel.

official Google Search Central resources

The current documentation structure also includes Generative AI fundamentals, reflecting how Search itself is evolving.

And this is exactly why I keep coming back to Search Central. SEO changes. The documentation changes with it.

Google’s update log shows that the SEO Starter Guide itself was refreshed in February 2026, while Google also added new guidance covering generative AI features in Search.

That gives official Google resources a major advantage over static courses that may remain untouched for years.

Score Breakdown

Course Content & Curriculum 5.0/5
Weight: 25%
Why this score?

As a primary source for Google Search, this is extremely difficult to beat. The documentation spans crawling, indexing, ranking, Search appearance, structured data, Search Console, spam policies, JavaScript, international SEO, AI features, and much more. Google also continuously updates the documentation.

Practical Learning 4.8/5
Weight: 20%
Why this score?

The documentation is intended to be used, not merely read. Search Console guidance, technical documentation, debugging resources, and examples make it directly applicable to real sites.

Teaching Quality 4.9/5
Weight: 15%
Why this score?

This isn't a matter of “trusting an SEO influencer.” These are Google's own published resources about Google Search. That does not mean the documentation answers every strategic SEO question you will ever face. It does mean that when the question is what Google says about Google Search, this is the obvious first reference.

Ease of Learning 3.9/5

Why this score?

The material ranges from beginner guidance to technical documentation, so learners must choose and organize their own path.

There is no certificate, but the knowledge itself has far more practical value than a certificate that simply proves course completion.

  • Official Google source

2. Google SEO Starter Guide

Google SEO Starter Guide

My take

This is the resource I would give to almost every person who tells me they want to learn SEO from scratch.

Not because it teaches everything. It doesn’t.

It doesn’t turn you into an SEO specialist, and it doesn’t replace real experience. What it does exceptionally well is establish a technically sound foundation.

Google’s SEO Starter Guide covers areas including helping Google discover your content, crawlability, indexing, site structure, URLs, duplicate content, useful content, links, and other fundamentals. Google also explicitly says that SEO is not about secret tricks that automatically put a site in first place.

That last point is important.

After years of doing SEO, one of the biggest differences I see between beginners and experienced SEOs is that experienced people stop looking for a magic ranking formula. They start thinking in terms of technical accessibility, relevance, usefulness, search behavior, site architecture, and evidence.

The Starter Guide is very good at establishing that mindset.

Is it enough on its own?

No.

Think of it as the foundation, not the entire building.

3. Google Search Essentials

Google Search Essentials

If the SEO Starter Guide explains what SEO is trying to accomplish, Search Essentials gives you a much sharper understanding of Google’s baseline requirements.

Google organizes Search Essentials around three areas:

  • Technical requirements
  • Spam policies
  • Key best practices

Google also makes something very clear that many SEO articles conveniently forget: meeting these requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index, or serve a page.

That is a very important distinction.

I regularly see people interpret indexing as a reward for “doing SEO correctly.” It isn’t. Google’s own documentation separates eligibility from actual crawling, indexing, and serving.

For someone learning SEO for Google, understanding that difference early can prevent a lot of bad thinking later.

4. Google Search Console

Google Search Console

You cannot become good at Google SEO by reading documentation alone. Eventually, you need to see what happens on an actual website.

That is where Google Search Console becomes essential.

Google describes Search Console as a tool for understanding how your site performs in Google Search, including how Google crawls, indexes, and serves your pages. Its performance reporting lets you examine queries, pages, countries, impressions, clicks, and trends.

From a practical SEO perspective, this is where theory starts meeting reality.

You can read about indexing for hours. Looking at a real site’s indexing problems, queries, impressions, CTR, page-level performance, and traffic changes teaches you something entirely different.

That is why I would never recommend a learning path based entirely around watching videos.

Build a website. Publish something. Connect Search Console. Observe what happens.

That is SEO.

The Best Google SEO Courses in 2026

Once you understand the official Google material, structured courses start making more sense.

Here are the courses I believe are genuinely worth considering.

1. Make Sure Customers Find You Online — Google Skillshop

Make sure customers find you online

This is the clearest choice for someone specifically searching for a free Google SEO course.

Before paying for another SEO course, go back to the source. Explore the official Google Search Central resources for the latest documentation, Search Console guidance, SEO guidance, and links to Google's official YouTube channel.

official Google Search Central resources

Google’s current Skillshop listing describes it as a free course covering search engines, SEO, SEM, and ways businesses can improve their search performance. The course is divided into four sections:

  • Get started with search — 45 minutes
  • Make search work for you — 25 minutes
  • Get discovered with search — 35 minutes
  • Help people nearby find you online — 25 minutes

4.3 /5
Best free Google SEO course, Skillshop CoursesMag Expert Score Our editorial assessment based on 6 weighted criteria.

Score Breakdown

Course Content & Curriculum 4.1/5
Weight: 25%
Why this score?

The curriculum is well scoped for a three-hour introductory course. It introduces Search, SEO, SEM, search visibility, and local discovery without trying to pretend that a few hours can turn someone into an SEO specialist.

Practical Learning 3.8/5
Weight: 20%
Why this score?

There is useful application-oriented material, but the practical depth is limited by the course's short format. You are introduced to concepts and actions; you are not being trained to diagnose complex crawling, indexing, architecture, or ranking problems.

Teaching Quality 4.4/5
Weight: 15%
Why this score?

The biggest advantage is that this is official Google training rather than a third party interpreting Google Search from the outside. The structure is straightforward and suitable for first-time learners.

Ease of Learning 4.7/5
Weight: 15%
Why this score?

This is one of its strongest points. The three-hour scope keeps the material accessible and makes it realistic for someone starting from scratch.

Value for Money 5.0/5
Weight: 15%
Why this score?

It is free, short, and directly relevant to someone looking for a free Google SEO course. It is difficult to argue with the value at that price.

Career Value 3.8/5
Weight: 10%
Why this score?

The credibility comes from Google itself, but completing a three-hour beginner course is obviously not evidence of professional SEO ability. Its career value is mainly as a starting point, not as a substitute for experience.

Pros

  • Official Google training
  • Completely free
  • Short and beginner-friendly
  • Covers Search and SEO fundamentals without unnecessary complexity
  • Useful introduction to local search visibility
  • Good starting point before moving into deeper SEO education
  • Cons

Cons

  • Too short for serious SEO training
  • Limited technical SEO depth
  • Little exposure to complex real-world SEO problems
  • Not designed for experienced SEO professionals
  • No standalone professional SEO certification

My take

This is a good starting course, not a complete SEO education.

That distinction matters.

If somebody has never encountered SEO before, spending three hours here is absolutely reasonable. It introduces search, SEO and visibility without drowning the learner in unnecessary complexity.

But I would not recommend finishing this course and assuming you now “know SEO.” You don’t.

Looking beyond Google's own training? Our guide to free Google SEO training and other no-cost SEO resources compares more options for learning SEO without paying for a course.

free Google SEO training

There is simply too much missing for that: deeper technical SEO, serious site auditing, advanced information architecture, complex indexing problems, large-site SEO, international SEO, detailed content strategy, advanced diagnostics and the messy reality of working on real websites.

Its real strength is that it is official, free and beginner-friendly.

And unlike many “free SEO courses” online, you know exactly where the information is coming from.

Best for

Beginners who specifically want to learn SEO from Google for free.

2. Google SEO Fundamentals — UC Davis on Coursera

Google SEO Fundamentals Davis, Coursera

This is one of the most interesting courses on this list because of the name.

Despite the title Google SEO Fundamentals, this is not a Google-created course. It is part of the University of California, Davis Search Engine Optimization Specialization and is taught by Rebekah May. Coursera currently lists it as an intermediate-level course with a 4.8/5 rating from more than 3,700 reviews.

Ready to move beyond the basics? Google SEO Fundamentals on Coursera goes further into keyword research, technical SEO, site structure, and competitive analysis.

Google SEO Fundamentals on Coursera

What makes it different?

The curriculum goes beyond “put your keyword in the title.”

It covers things like:

  • Competitive analysis
  • Keyword research
  • Search behavior
  • On-page SEO
  • Sitemaps
  • Robots.txt
  • Redirects
  • Site errors
  • Content strategy
  • SEO and web analytics

The course also currently includes material about how AI is changing SEO.

Score Breakdown

Course Content & Curriculum 4.6/5

Why this score?

This is where the course earns most of its score. It moves beyond generic “SEO basics” and includes competitive analysis, keyword research, search behavior, on-page analysis, sitemaps, robots.txt, redirects, URL structure, error handling, and site architecture.

Practical Learning 4.1/5

There are assignments and applied exercises, including keyword opportunity analysis. That is valuable, but the experience is still bounded by a course environment. It cannot reproduce the diagnostic complexity of a real client site.

Rebekah May's instruction benefits from both academic structure and professional SEO context. Coursera currently shows an instructor rating of 4.8/5.

Ease of Learning 4.4/5
Weight: 15%
Why this score?

The material is reasonably structured, but this is an intermediate course. Someone completely new to SEO may find concepts like crawlability, redirects, site errors, and technical architecture more demanding than the introductory UC Davis course.

Value for Money 4.5/5

Why this score?

The amount of dedicated SEO material is strong for the time investment, particularly for someone who wants more than a superficial introduction.

Career Value 4.2/5

The UC Davis credential is useful as evidence of structured learning, but I would still put much more weight on your actual SEO portfolio, audits, results, and ability to explain your decisions.

Pros

  • Strong dedicated SEO curriculum
  • University of California, Davis credential
  • Technical SEO fundamentals are included
  • Covers keyword research and competitive analysis
  • Includes practical assignments
  • Current curriculum includes AI's impact on SEO
  • Shareable certificate

Cons

  • Not advanced Technical SEO training
  • Course exercises cannot replicate real client work
  • Certificate is not a substitute for experience
  • Some concepts remain introductory from a practitioner perspective
  • Advanced enterprise, JavaScript, migration, and large-site SEO are outside its scope

My take

This is much closer to what I want from a real SEO course.

I particularly like the inclusion of technical implementation concepts alongside keyword research and content.

That combination matters.

One of the weaknesses of beginner SEO education is that it often treats SEO as if it were primarily content writing. In real projects, that is nowhere near enough. A page can have excellent content and still have crawlability, indexing, canonical, rendering, internal-linking or structural problems.

The opposite is also true: perfect technical SEO cannot compensate for weak content.

A good SEO learns to work across both sides.

This course does a respectable job of moving in that direction.

The limitation

I would not rely on it as my sole SEO education.

The course is useful, but the official Google documentation should remain the authority for Google-specific guidance. Coursera gives you structure and teaching; Search Central gives you Google’s current primary documentation.

That is an important distinction.

Best for

Learners who already understand basic SEO and want something more structured and technical.

3. Attract and Engage Customers with Digital Marketing — Google on Coursera

Attract and Engage Customers with Digital Marketing

This one deserves a place in a Google SEO course review even though it is not an SEO-only course. And that is precisely why I would include it.

SEO makes more sense when you understand where it fits in the customer journey. Explore Google's SEO and digital marketing course to connect search visibility with the wider marketing process.

Google's SEO and digital marketing course

Google’s own curriculum includes a dedicated SEO component covering how Google Search works, rankings, keyword research, site structure, content optimization, titles and meta descriptions, structured data, Search Console, and search performance.

The current course is beginner level and includes hands-on activities, assignments and practice exercises. Its SEO portion covers two modules specifically focused on understanding and applying SEO.

Practical Learning 4.3/5
Weight: 20%
Why this score?

This is one of its strongest qualities. Google describes hands-on activities and exercises designed to simulate common digital-marketing and e-commerce tasks. The course also teaches learners to use Search Console to monitor a site's presence in Google Search.

It is explicitly beginner-level and requires no prior experience. The progression is well suited to someone entering digital marketing.

Value for Money 4.6/5

The value is good if you actually want the broader marketing curriculum. It becomes less attractive if your only objective is advanced SEO, because you are paying for knowledge outside SEO as well.

Pros

  • This can make more sense for an entry-level digital marketer than for an experienced SEO specialist. Google says the broader certificate is designed around entry-level job readiness and includes a portfolio component.

Cons

  • Not an SEO-specialist course
  • Significant time spent on SEM and digital advertising
  • Not deep enough for advanced technical SEO
  • Less suitable for experienced SEOs looking for specialization

My take

This is a better option for somebody who wants to understand SEO as part of marketing, rather than somebody whose only goal is to become a dedicated SEO specialist.

That difference is important.

Real SEO does not happen in isolation. Search intent connects to customers. Content connects to conversion. Keywords connect to products and services. Search traffic connects to business outcomes.

I actually like that this course doesn’t pretend SEO is the entire world of digital marketing.

At the same time, that is also its weakness for an SEO specialist.

A meaningful portion of the course is about SEM, Google Ads, funnels, advertising and broader digital marketing.

So I would not buy it specifically because you want deep SEO training.

I’d choose it because you want SEO + digital marketing fundamentals in one structured program.

Best for

Beginners entering digital marketing who want SEO included in a wider professional curriculum.

4. Fundamentals of Digital Marketing — Google Skillshop

Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, skillshop

This is a much broader program than a typical Google SEO training course.

SEO is only one piece of digital growth. For a broader foundation spanning modern digital marketing, Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing is the more comprehensive starting point.

Google's Fundamentals of Digital Marketing

Google currently lists it as a 40-hour, beginner-level course with 17 modules, practical exercises and real-world examples. Completing it earns a Skillshop award that can be added to your profile and LinkedIn.

I wouldn’t choose this if your only goal is:

“Teach me SEO as fast as possible.”

There are more focused options.

But for someone who wants to understand where SEO sits inside the larger marketing system, it makes much more sense.

Google SEO Fundamentals covers useful technical foundations, but it isn't designed to turn you into an advanced technical SEO specialist. For a deeper look at specialist training, see our technical SEO courses comparison.

One thing I like about the current version is its broader coverage of contemporary digital marketing, including AI tools. Google says the course was created by experts at Google and includes practical exercises and real-world examples.

The SEO component is valuable, but I would consider it supporting SEO knowledge rather than specialist SEO training.

Best for

Beginners who want SEO knowledge as part of a complete digital marketing foundation.

5. Introduction to Google SEO — UC Davis on Coursera

Introduction to Google SEO

This is another course that appears prominently when people search for Google SEO Course or Introduction to Google SEO.

Again, the title can be misleading if you do not look at the provider: it is a UC Davis course, not a Google-produced course.

Starting from zero and want a guided path rather than a pile of disconnected tutorials? Introduction to Google SEO for beginners offers a structured entry into the fundamentals.

My take

I see this as the more accessible entry point into the UC Davis SEO path.

However, there is an important caveat for CoursesMag readers:

I would not treat Introduction to Google SEO and Google SEO Fundamentals as two completely independent SEO educations.

They are both part of the same UC Davis SEO Specialization. The specialization currently contains five courses and is designed as a connected learning path.

So I would choose between them based on your starting level rather than taking them as unrelated courses simply because both contain “Google SEO” in the title.

Best for

Complete beginners who want a structured introduction before moving deeper into SEO.

What About the Google SEO Starter Guide?

Here is where I disagree with the way many Google SEO courses review articles are structured.

They treat the Starter Guide as an optional extra.

I don’t.

For someone learning SEO specifically for Google, I would put the Google SEO Starter Guide alongside the courses, not beneath them.

Why?

Because a paid course is teaching you through someone else’s interpretation. Search Central is Google’s own documentation.

That does not mean every line of official documentation is enough to solve a real SEO problem. It isn’t. Real-world SEO requires interpretation, diagnosis and experience.

But when the question is:

“What does Google actually say about this?”

my first stop is Google.

Google itself describes the Starter Guide as a guide to improving performance in Google Search, while Search Essentials defines the technical requirements, spam policies and key best practices surrounding Search visibility.

That should be the starting point for how to learn SEO from Google.

Is There a Google SEO Certification?

This is one of the most common questions around Google SEO training.

Does Google offer an SEO certification?

Google does not currently list a standalone professional certification called “Google SEO Certification” in its official training/certificate offerings.

That is different from saying Google offers no SEO-related education or credentials.

Google does offer:

  • SEO training through Skillshop
  • Official Search Central documentation
  • Google Search Console training/resources
  • The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Career Certificate
  • Awards/certificates attached to specific Google learning programs

The distinction is important.

A Google Career Certificate in Digital Marketing & E-commerce is a real Google credential, but it is not an “SEO certification.” The program is much broader, covering areas such as search, email, analytics, e-commerce, social media and paid media.

So when you see a page promising a Google SEO Certificate, check exactly what credential it is talking about.

The word “Google” alone does not tell you who actually issued the credential.

Is a Google SEO Certificate Worth It?

This is where I would be careful.

A certificate can prove that you completed a course.

It cannot prove that you know how to diagnose a badly indexed website.

It cannot prove that you can perform a technical SEO audit.

It cannot prove that you can build a useful content strategy.

And it certainly cannot prove that you can consistently improve organic performance on a real website.

That is not an argument against certificates. They have a place, especially for beginners who need structured learning or want something concrete to put on a CV.

But I would never confuse credential completion with SEO competence.

Interestingly, this concern also appears repeatedly in SEO communities. In one Reddit discussion about Google-recommended Coursera SEO training, users debated the value of certificates versus actually applying what they learned.

That skepticism isn’t unique to Reddit.

After eight years working in SEO, I agree with the underlying principle:

A certificate can support your learning. It cannot replace evidence that you can do the work.

Do You Need a Course to Learn SEO?

Honestly?

No.

And this is another area where I think many course roundups oversell courses.

A recent discussion from an SEO developer who had limited time produced a particularly relevant point: the user was worried about spending a month on training only to discover that the material was outdated. One highly upvoted response recommended Google Search Central documentation and learning directly on a real site instead of relying entirely on courses.

Another recent SEO discussion made the same broader point from a different angle: SEO learners were concerned about outdated material and emphasized hands-on learning.

I would put it this way:

Courses give you structure. Real websites give you judgment.

You need both at some point.

How to Learn SEO from Google Without Becoming Dependent on Courses

My preferred learning path would look something like this.

Step 1: Read the Google SEO Starter Guide

Understand crawling, indexing, content, links, site structure and the fundamentals.

Step 2: Learn Search Essentials

Understand technical requirements, spam policies and Google’s core best practices.

Step 3: Learn Search Console

Do not just watch someone explain it.

Connect a real website and start looking at queries, impressions, clicks, indexing and page-level data. Google itself recommends Search Console as a way to understand Search performance and indexing.

Step 4: Take a structured course

This is where something like Google SEO Fundamentals or Make Sure Customers Find You Online becomes useful.

You now have enough context to understand why you’re learning something instead of memorizing terminology.

Step 5: Work on a real website

This is the part that no course can fully reproduce.

Try to diagnose:

  • Why isn’t this page indexed?
  • Why is this query getting impressions but few clicks?
  • Why did traffic fall?
  • Why is Google choosing another canonical?
  • Why is this page not performing despite good content?
  • Where are the internal-linking weaknesses?
  • What does the SERP tell me about intent?

This is where SEO begins to become a professional skill.

What About SEO and AI Search in 2026?

Anyone choosing an up-to-date SEO course should pay attention to this.

But I would also be suspicious of courses that make AI/GEO sound like a completely separate replacement for SEO.

Google’s current guidance is remarkably clear: the best practices for traditional SEO remain relevant to AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google says there are no additional technical requirements or special optimization techniques required to appear in those features; the existing foundations still matter.

Google published a dedicated resource for generative AI in Search in May 2026 and explicitly stated that SEO remains foundational because these AI experiences are rooted in Google’s core Search systems.

That is exactly why I would rather learn strong SEO fundamentals than chase every newly branded “GEO” tactic.

The terminology changes quickly.

The fundamentals don’t change nearly as quickly.

My Take: What I Would Actually Recommend

I would not tell every learner to take the same Google SEO course.

Your starting point matters.

Complete beginner

Start with the Google SEO Starter Guide and Make Sure Customers Find You Online.

You get Google’s own documentation plus a structured beginner course without spending money.

Beginner who wants a full digital marketing foundation

The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate makes more sense because SEO is taught within a broader marketing curriculum. The current program contains eight courses and is designed around roughly six months at 10 hours per week, with more than 190 hours of instruction and practice-based assessments.

Beginner who specifically wants SEO

I would look more closely at Introduction to Google SEO and then continue through the UC Davis SEO Specialization rather than jumping between disconnected beginner courses. The specialization currently consists of five courses and includes a hands-on capstone.

Learner who already understands SEO basics

Google SEO Fundamentals is more interesting because it moves further into competitive analysis, keyword strategy, technical implementation and on-page analysis.

Learner who wants the most authoritative free material

Forget the course-shopping for a moment.

Go to Google Search Central.

Read the documentation.

Open Search Console.

Build something.

Break something.

Fix it.

Then go back to the documentation and figure out why it behaved that way.

That learning loop is far more valuable than collecting certificates.

Final Verdict

There is no single “Google SEO course” that can teach you everything you need to know about SEO.

And I would be suspicious of anyone claiming otherwise.

Google Search Central is the foundation I trust most for learning SEO for Google Search, because it is Google’s own documentation and is continuously updated as Search evolves.

For structured learning, Make Sure Customers Find You Online is a legitimate free Google starting point, while Google SEO Fundamentals from UC Davis is a substantially deeper option for learners who want dedicated SEO training. The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Certificate makes more sense for people who want SEO within a broader marketing curriculum.

And one final point from my own eight years in SEO:

I would much rather see someone understand why Google recommends a practice, test it on a real website, measure the result, and understand the limitations than see someone collect five SEO certificates without ever owning the consequences of their decisions.

That is the difference between learning SEO and simply studying SEO.
