Finding an SEO course on Coursera isn’t difficult. Finding one that’s actually worth your time is a different story.
Coursera now has everything from broad SEO programs and traditional SEO fundamentals to technical audits, content marketing, and newer courses built around AI SEO, Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
I’ve reviewed the current Coursera SEO options with a simple question in mind:
What will you actually learn from this course, how much of it can you apply, and is it worth the time and money?
I also looked beyond Coursera’s star ratings and checked learner reviews and discussions from SEO practitioners on Reddit. That matters because the community’s view of SEO courses is often much more skeptical than the marketing pages.
Coursera is just one place to learn SEO. For a wider look at courses from different platforms and providers, start with our complete SEO course guide.
Based on that research, these are the Coursera SEO courses I would put on a serious learner’s shortlist in 2026.

How We Evaluated These Coursera SEO Courses
I don’t think a 4.8-star Coursera rating is enough to tell you whether an SEO course is worth taking.
For this guide, I used the same six criteria we use across CoursesMag course reviews:
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Course Content & Curriculum | 25% |
| Practical Learning | 20% |
| Teaching Quality | 15% |
| Ease of Learning | 15% |
| Value for Money | 15% |
| Career Value | 10% |
I also looked at the instructor or organization behind each program, the size and quality of the learner-review base, assignments and projects, certificate options, current relevance, and how well the material maps to real SEO work.
That last part became especially important while researching the newer AI-focused courses. A course can be very current without yet having enough learner history to prove its quality over time.
Key Takeaway
The UC Davis SEO Specialization is still the most complete traditional SEO learning path in this group, and it has by far the largest body of learner feedback.
But I wouldn’t automatically recommend it to everyone.
Someone who wants a shorter standalone course may be better served by Google SEO Fundamentals. Someone focused on content may prefer IBM’s SEO and Content Marketing course, while an SEO professional interested in AI search has newer options such as IBM SEO Mastery and 2026 AI SEO Tools and Techniques.
And there is one theme that kept appearing in the SEO community:
Taking an SEO course is not the same as gaining SEO experience.
Reddit users repeatedly recommend building a real site, testing keywords, publishing content, using Search Console, and learning from actual results alongside formal study.
1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialization — University of California, Davis

When I compare the current Coursera SEO catalog, the UC Davis Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialization is the most complete traditional SEO path.
It is a five-course program that moves from introductory concepts through fundamentals, website optimization, advanced content/social tactics, and finally a Capstone Project. Coursera currently lists a 4.6/5 rating from more than 13,000 reviews, with more than 276,000 learners, and classifies the Specialization as beginner level.
Want a structured path through SEO instead of piecing your education together from random tutorials? Explore the full UC Davis SEO Specialization and see what you'll learn across all five courses.
Explore the UC Davis SEO SpecializationThe five courses are:
- Introduction to Google SEO
- Google SEO Fundamentals
- Optimizing a Website for Google Search
- Advanced Content and Social Tactics to Optimize SEO
- Google SEO Capstone Project
The breadth is what immediately stands out to me.
You’re not just learning keyword research and title tags. The program moves through technical concepts, competitive analysis, website optimization, content, social tactics and other areas that give beginners a more complete picture of SEO.

What Learners Say
The overall rating is strong, but written reviews reveal a more nuanced picture.
One learner praised the introductory course for giving beginners a clear understanding of SEO and search engines. Another review of the website-optimization course appreciated the material but pointed out that some tools required for coursework were no longer free.
If cost is your main consideration, we've narrowed the field down to SEO courses you can take without paying for enrollment.
What Reddit Says
This is where the picture becomes more interesting.
In an r/SEO discussion specifically about the UC Davis Coursera SEO Specialization, opinions were mixed. Some users saw value in having a structured curriculum, while others questioned the practical value of an SEO certification by itself.
Other Reddit discussions repeatedly make a similar point: build a site and learn by doing. One long-running r/SEO thread literally starts with the recommendation to build a site, try to rank it, and learn along the way.
My Take
The biggest strength here is structure.
For someone starting from zero, I like the fact that the Specialization tells you what to learn next. You’re not forced to assemble your SEO education from random YouTube videos, blog posts and isolated tutorials.
The limitation is that SEO is too messy to fully learn inside a course.
The Capstone makes the program more practical, but I would still use a real website alongside it. That’s where concepts like crawling, keyword selection, content performance and search visibility stop being abstract.
I’d use this as a foundation—not as a substitute for real SEO work.
Who Is It Best For?
This is the option I would look at first for someone who wants a complete, structured introduction to SEO and doesn’t mind working through a multi-course program.
2. Google SEO Fundamentals — University of California, Davis

The second UC Davis option is interesting for a completely different reason. You don’t necessarily need the entire Specialization.
Google SEO Fundamentals can be taken as an individual course and currently has a 4.8/5 rating from 3,712 reviews, with more than 191,000 learners. Coursera classifies it as intermediate level and estimates roughly nine hours of coursework.
You don't always need a five-course program to build a solid SEO foundation. Start with Google SEO Fundamentals and see how far a single focused course can take you.

My Take
If I only had time for one traditional SEO course on Coursera, this is the type of option I’d seriously consider.
The curriculum goes beyond the most basic “what is SEO?” discussion and gets into things that you’ll actually encounter when working with websites.
It also has a useful middle ground: you’re not spending several weeks completing an entire Specialization, but you’re still getting more than a superficial introduction.
Who Is It Best For?
Learners who want a substantial standalone SEO course without committing to the complete UC Davis Specialization.
3. Search Engine Optimization and Content Marketing — IBM

SEO and content marketing overlap heavily in real-world work, and IBM’s Search Engine Optimization and Content Marketing course reflects that.
Interested in the more technical side of search? Our dedicated guide focuses specifically on courses covering technical SEO.
Coursera currently lists it as beginner level with a 4.8/5 rating from 39 reviews and 12,837 enrolled learners. The course consists of five modules and is estimated at roughly one week at 10 hours per week.
SEO works better when you understand how search, content, and measurement fit together. This IBM course brings those pieces into one learning path.
See What IBM CoversThe curriculum includes keyword research, on-page and off-page SEO, meta tags, link building, domain authority, technical SEO, mobile optimization, site speed, schema, analytics and Google Search Console. Coursera currently lists 15 assignments.

My Take
What I like about this one is that it doesn’t pretend SEO exists in a vacuum.
In actual marketing work, keyword research, content production, optimization, promotion and measurement are connected. The course reflects that relationship better than a narrowly technical program would.
The trade-off is depth. Because the course tries to cover both SEO and content marketing, I wouldn’t choose it expecting advanced expertise in technical SEO.
Who Is It Best For?
Content marketers, bloggers, digital marketers and small-business owners who want SEO and content skills together.
4. SEO Mastery: From Fundamentals to GenAI and GEO Strategies — IBM

This is where the Coursera catalog becomes much more interesting.
SEO Mastery: From Fundamentals to GenAI and GEO Strategies is an IBM Specialization built around four courses. Coursera currently lists a 4.7/5 rating across 91 reviews and more than 7,700 enrolled learners.
SEO is no longer just about blue links. Explore how this IBM Specialization connects traditional SEO with GenAI, GEO, content strategy, and emerging search experiences.

What Learners Say
The feedback is mostly positive.
One learner called the GEO course structured and step-by-step, while another specifically praised the interactivity and repetition that helped the material stick.
My Take
This is one of the courses I’d pay particular attention to in 2026.
I don’t think the right way to learn modern SEO is to throw away everything we’ve learned about traditional search and replace it with “GEO.” The useful approach is understanding how the fundamentals still work while learning how AI-driven discovery changes content and visibility.
That’s where this Specialization makes sense.
The only thing that makes me hesitate is its relatively small review history compared with UC Davis.
Who Is It Best For?
SEOs and digital marketers who already understand SEO fundamentals and want to add GenAI, GEO and AI-search concepts.
5. Strategic SEO Mastery: Tools, Strategy & Case Studies — EDUCBA

The Strategic SEO Mastery: Tools, Strategy & Case Studies Specialization from EDUCBA is a newer option with a strong strategy component.
Coursera currently lists three courses, beginner level, around four weeks at 10 hours per week, with a 4.8/5 rating from 17 reviews.
Looking for more than a list of SEO tactics? Take a closer look at how this program connects SEO decisions with strategy, business context, audits, and real-world case studies.

My Take
The strategy angle is what makes this course interesting.
A lot of beginner SEO education is essentially a list of tactics: keywords, titles, links, content and so on.
I prefer when a course also asks why we’re doing these things and how SEO fits into a business objective. That’s where the case-study structure can be useful.
The downside is that only 17 reviews isn’t enough for me to have the same confidence in the program’s long-term quality as I would with UC Davis.
Who Is It Best For?
Beginners who want to understand SEO strategy in a broader marketing and business context.
6. 2026 AI SEO Tools And Techniques — Alex Genadinik
Best for AI SEO, LLM SEO, GEO & AEO

This is one of the newest SEO programs currently available on Coursera.
2026 AI SEO Tools And Techniques (LLM SEO, GEO, AEO) is a six-course Specialization focused explicitly on AI SEO, LLM SEO, GEO and AEO.
Coursera currently lists it as beginner level, approximately four weeks at 10 hours per week, with a 4.5/5 rating from 11 reviews.
The stated curriculum includes AI-powered keyword research, on-page optimization, AI SEO tools, LLM SEO, GEO and AEO.
Curious about LLM SEO, GEO, and AEO? This is one of the newest SEO programs on Coursera, built specifically around AI-powered search and modern visibility strategies.
Explore AI SEO on CourseraI like the fact that the program doesn’t hide from terms such as LLM SEO, GEO and AEO. Those are topics that anyone working in search in 2026 should at least understand.
But I’m also much more cautious here.
Eleven reviews aren’t enough for me to treat a new AI SEO course like a program with thousands of learner experiences behind it.
So I’d approach this as a specialized modern layer on top of SEO fundamentals, not as my only SEO education.

7. Optimizing a Website for Google Search — University of California, Davis

If you already understand basic SEO, there is another UC Davis course worth separating from the broader Specialization:
Optimizing a Website for Google Search.
Coursera currently lists 93,304 learners, a 4.7/5 rating from 1,660 reviews, intermediate level and roughly one week of learning at 10 hours per week.

What Learners Say
This course has some particularly useful critical feedback.
One learner complained that some of the tools required in the Specialization were no longer free. Another gave the course four stars while describing it as informative but too theoretical and asking for more practical demonstrations and tool training.
My Take
I see this course as a focused piece of SEO training, not a complete SEO education.
The part I find most useful is the shift from “what is SEO?” toward what do I do with this website?
That’s a much more useful framing once you’ve already learned the basic terminology.
Who Is It Best For?
People who understand basic SEO and want a focused course around website optimization, keywords, audits and SEO campaign thinking.
